Twenty year old Southern Sudanese student, Anok Yai  has been ranked one of the most beautiful women on earth! Weird right? Seeing as the typical most beautiful woman is expected to be blonde. Well, Anok Yai is one of the clearest definition of ‘Unapologetically Black‘.

The Egyptian born, American fashion model of Sudanese descent took the modelling world by storm when her picture was taken by Steve Hall, a professional photographer during Howard University’s homecoming week.

He literally stumbled into her when someone else was taking her picture on a camera phone. He took a few candid shots of her and posted the picture on Instagram where it went viral with over 20,000 people liking it, including modelling agencies.

Instantly, she became a superstar as her phone won’t stop buzzing and thousands of people shared and commented on the post.That was the beginning of stardom for  Yai who was immediately shot into stardom by that singular photo. Modelling agencies all wanted to hire her… and all these happened in a flash.

Since then, she got contacted by several modelling agencies and signed with Next Models on Tuesday.

Recently, Anok Yai made fashion history of becoming the first black model to open Prada since Naomi Campbell in 1997.

“It is an honour and I’m proud that I was chosen to open, but this is bigger than me. Me opening for one of the top fashion houses is a statement to the world, especially for black women- that their beauty is something that deserves to be celebrated” she told Vogue of the  moment.

Anok Yai’s celebrated ‘dark skin’ is one again chance to change perceptions, especially those pertaining to beauty. It stresses the importance of self- love and self-confidence.
